August 4 Election

Election Day - August 4

Tuesday, August 4, 2020 is the State Primary.  The Northfield Township Clerk's Office will be open this Saturday, August 1st from 8:00am - 4:00pm for all voting needs.  Here are some reminders to help your Election Day go smoothly!

Register to Vote:  With the new state laws, you can register to vote up until the day of the election at your local Clerk’s office. To register to vote in Michigan you must be:

  • A resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register to vote for at least 30 days before election day.
  • A citizen of the United States of America.
  • At least 18 years of age by election day.
  • Not serving a sentence in jail or prison.

PLEASE NOTE:  Individuals who register to vote within the 14-day period immediately preceding an election must appear in person at the township clerk’s office and provide 30 days proof of residency at the time of registration.  Proof of residency includes a utility bill or bank statement with your name and current address within our township, or a Michigan driver’s license or state ID with your current address within our township.

Absent Voter Ballots: Absent Voter (AV) Ballots are available from the Clerk's office through Monday, August 3rd until 4:00pm. If you request an AV Ballot on August 3rd, you MUST vote in-house at the time you submit your application.

After receiving your AV ballot, you have until 8:00 p.m. on election day to complete the AV ballot and return it to the Clerk's Office.  BALLOTS RECEIVED AFTER POLLS CLOSE AT 8:00PM ON ELECTION DAY CANNOT BE COUNTED.  Please DO NOT take your AV Ballot to the precincts. Your AV ballot must have your signature and the date on the return envelope, and your signature on the envelope must match your signature on file.

AV Ballots can be dropped off at the Township office:
8350 Main St.
Whitmore Lake, MI 48189.

Ballots must be received in our office before the polls close at 8:00pm on election day.  Post marks are not accepted. If you are not able to come in during normal business hours to return your AV ballot (Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm) there is a 24-hour Drop Box available in the office vestibule.

You can check to see that your AV ballot has been received in our office by visiting www.michigan.gov/vote

Tips for Election Day:  Arriving at the polls prepared can help the process move along more smoothly and efficiently for everyone.  Here are some helpful tips for your Election Day:

  • Know Before You Go - Preview Your Ballot:  Prepare yourself for the election by previewing your ballot before you head to the polls.
Visit www.michigan.gov/vote to view your ballot today!
  • Have Your ID Ready:  By law, every Michigan voter must either present picture identification at the polls, or sign an affidavit attesting that he or she is not in possession of picture identification.  It does move the line along more quickly when you have your ID out and ready to go before approaching the Election Inspectors at Check-in.
  • Know Where To Go:  It can be frustrating to stand in a long line only to find out when you get to the front that it was the wrong line!  Knowing which precinct you are assigned to before you head to the polls can help eliminate this frustration.  You can verify your precinct before election day by visiting www.michigan.gov/vote
Polling locations for each precinct are listed below.  If you are still unsure of which precinct you are in when you arrive at the polls, there will be a binder with a list of voters available as you enter the polling location.  There you can verify your precinct and make sure you are at the correct location before waiting in line to vote. Please note Precincts 1 and 3 are at the same location so after verifying your precinct, make sure you get into the correct line when voting at this location.
  • Avoid Peak Hours:  If your schedule permits, please consider avoiding the peak voting hours of 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The busiest times in the polling place tend to overlap with morning and evening rush hours. You are less likely to encounter long lines if you are able to visit your polling place between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. No matter when you vote, though, remember that all voters who are standing in line when the polls close at 8:00pm are entitled to cast a ballot.

Poll Hours: Polls will open at 7:00am on Election Day and will remain open until 8:00pm.
