Chief Martin B. Smith

Martin Smith is a 1987 Graduate of Grand Valley State with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Chief Smith has been an officer since 1986. After attending the Grand Valley State Police Academy, he worked for 18 years for the Oak Park Public Safety Department where he was crossed trained as a firefighter. While working in Oak Park, Chief Smith was a Field Training Officer, Major Crimes Task Force Officer, and a Detective for 5 years. Upon his retirement in 2005, he was hired as a full-time police officer in Northfield Township. After being named the full-time Investigator in the summer of 2008 he was promoted to Sergeant in 2010. In November 2016, Chief Smith was then named Interim Lieutenant assuming the role of Police Operations Supervisor. He then attended and graduated from Eastern Michigan University’s Staff and Command School in October 2018. On August 23, 2022, Martin was sworn in as the new Chief of Police for Northfield Township. Chief Smith believes in Community Policing and having officers in the community so residents can relate to them. He values his service and commitment to the protection of every resident in Northfield Township. He believes the support of the community is a direct reflection of the job his officers are doing and the leadership of his supervisors.
